Upstate New York

April 30, 2008

I have just come back from a wonderful holiday in New York to visit Liz who was my friend and the start of the trip and is now my girlfriend 🙂

One of the things I enjoyed most about the trip was our visit to Liz’s family summer bungalow in upstate New York, there was something poignant about the place for me, somehow the pictures make me feel nostalgic for the place even although I was only there for a couple of days and it was very recently…

the full set is here on flickr.

I seem to have taken a lot of reflection pictures recently. I didn’t set out to do this but have ended up with quite a few where reflection features in some way or other.

All of these mono ones were taken on my Olympus XA3 (more of my pics from this camera). It is great little 1980s point and shoot / zone focusing cameras that can be had pretty cheap on ebay (I paid 15 pounds for mine but it still had the flash, case and manual so you can probably get them for less). It takes films up to 1600 and is s5mm which is an ideal focal length. I also like the viewfinder – just frame lines and nothing else to distract you.

They are literally pocket sized so ideal as a ‘take anywhere’ camera. I am thinking of buying a second one so that I can have one with colour in it and one with black and white…

I am definitely drawn to these types of shots, something about layering and visual trickery really appeal to me although almost always the successful ones are in black and white. This one is an exception to that rule (you might recognise it from the blog header 🙂

There be Dragons (in the back garden)

April 11, 2008

These were taken playing in the back garden of my parents house with assorted Nieces an Nephews.

Zoe got into a proper panic about dragons for some reason … I was not sure whether she was pretending that Holly was a dragon or if it was an imaginary dragon but she was running about as fast as she could screaming about dragons.

… shortly after these were taken I became the dragon…then she had something to be scared of!

In the meantime Iver decided to drag his little car thing about the place…

I do like to be beside the seaside…

Every time I hear that song I think of the time my Dad shattered the silence in a big posh hotel in Cyprus by playing it with gusto on the big white grand piano in the austere reception area 🙂

Anyway these were all taken on Easter weekend on a trip down the coast with Rob. We didn’t stay too long cos it was freezing. Also I somehow lost my panoramic camera when we were there which is a pain. I have another and it only cost me 2 quid in the first place so its no big deal really but I do miss it!
